Why was Gretchen Phillips voted into the Austin Chronicle’s 2000-2001 Music Poll Hall of Fame? Let’s see. Her choice to put a lesbian point of view front and center in her songs has been cited as an inspiration to such indie pop sensations as Le Tigre, The Butchies and Pansy Division. Her bold and creative use of Casio presets has been cited as an influence on Austin’s own foul-mouthed music sensation Hug. And, very arguably, where would Riot Grrrrl be without Meat Joy, her seminal first band, which artfully combined sexual politics with lots of humor? [website]

Phranc

Phranc

Phranc

http://www.myspace.com/phrancmyspace
Self-professed “all-American, Jewish, lesbian folksinger” Phranc got her start in the late ’70s Punk rock movement with synth rock band Nervous Gender and reggae Goth band Catholic Discipline (a band that would be immortalized in the first installment of the Decline of Western Civilization movies). During this period, she would sing some of her more political songs acoustically to allow the audience to clearly hear her words. It was these performances that eventually led to the discovery of her voice as an acoustic folk artist. During the span of her early solo releases (Folksinger and on), she discovered her niche — a voice for not only the gay and lesbian community, but for the socially conscious everywhere. Phranc’s music is often humorous in approach, but the underlying message is always based on serious subject matter.

They sound like a three-finger shot of “awesome.” … Sixties-styled, organ-fueled, fuzzed-out garage soul that couldn’t get any more R&B stuffed into it even with a shoehorn.
- Verbicide

Perfect for Little Steven’s Underground Garage radio show … Vocalist Scotty channels Eric Burdon in his howling … Think The Seeds, mid-70s punk garage soul-rock and pub-rock, delivered with swagger and attitude along with a wink.
- Music Connection

This is a disc of solid, R&B, garage soul living in CA with a groove address in Detroit … the whole disc will make you wanna find a dark, smoky, steamy club and shake what your Momma gave you with some hot stranger while hitting the well bourbon. Old school party soul.
- Music Cookie

Seconds into the lead off track “Soul Sister” you’ll be shaking it and having a ball. The 12-track album is a delightful rhythmic, dance-filled romp!
- Sinister Girlz

Is psyche-soul a style yet? If not, it should be and the Hi-Nobles might think about getting the patent on it. This collection of bad boys rushes head on into the world of rhythm & blues, but does it in a way that turns everything upside down just enough to be new.
- Sonic Boomers

Even through the cold digital medium, The Hi-Nobles seem like the ones to ignite a red-hot dance party.
- The Agit Reader

Shake! takes the listener on a time trip back to the 1960s … they’ve learned the lessons of their forefathers well, and clearly know how to raise the right kind of rock ‘n roll ruckus
- Sound Advice

If there was no such thing as “punk blues” before, there is now … If you’re up for the non-stop frenetic pace, you won’t have any problems listening to this entire disc, but a B-12 shot might be a good idea!
- Vintage Guitar

Any opportunity to hear The Avengers’ string smasher is one worth happily taking, because when a guitar gets in to the man’s hands, nothing stops him from delivering an all-fronts sonic assault. Which is exactly what he does on this Music Machine/Seeds/Sonics-inspired assault. Dig the new breed baby!
- The Big Takeover

The Hi-Nobles have definitely hit a high note with this record … The musical attainability and substance of Shake! is most genuine and spells out good times, track-per-track. Shake!, as the album title suggests, will shake your soul to the core and get your two left feet dancing in no time.
- Frantik Mag

It’s been a while since I’ve seen REAL punk being laid down, without emo or screamo BS. I worked Warped Tour for five years and the Hi Nobles were definitely raw refreshment punching you in the eye.
- Performer Magazine

The Hi-Nobles carry off their highly polished blues rock sound with more than just finesse, it has an amazing sense of soul … It is the essence of good music in a bottle. Drink it up.

Genius and the Thieves are five guys who love what they do.

Having spent the majority of their lives in and out of bands all over the musical spectrum, Genius and the Thieves got serious in late 2008 and brought what was once a side project into focus. Now they spend most of their time making rock and roll with a distinct indie edge and drinking fancy beers.

Their live shows have been called fearless and full of raw energy. Be forewarned: dance parties and sing alongs usually ensue.

Meeting through a chance encounter, Rebekah Formica and Adam Simon bonded over music instantly, sharing a love of such acts as Carole King, M. Ward, Cole Porter and other standards from the Great American songbook. It wasn’t long before they started writing their own songs. Adam’s pop melodic style of classic songwriting paired perfectly with Rebekah’s 3 octave range. Punchy piano, long legato vocal lines, and melisma-filled melodies combine to form a repertoire overflowing with ultra-catchy gems.

“Wonderful, colorful arrangements and warm, human sounding vocals….top notch,” —Don Campau, DJ at No PigeonHoles Radio.”

Singing about faith, love and loss, San Francisco songwriter Deborah Crooks is an intimate and edgy artist whose lyric driven and soul-wise music has drawn comparison to Lucinda Williams, Jesse Sykes and The Cowboy Junkies. Widely published as an essayist and journalist, her lyrics are honed by a lifetime of writing, while her music draws on folk, rock, Americana and the blues. Her first full length CD “Adding Water to the Ashes,” (2008) garnered favorable reviews and led to her receiving a Bay Bridged Recording Grant to record at Tiny Telephone Studios. The result is the new EP “It’s All Up to You” featuring 7 new tracks that range from acoustic pop to folk-rock to blues. Deborah has also showcased at the 2006 Millennium Music Conference, the 2005 Rocker Girl Magazine Music Convention, during SXSW, at the 2007 Harmony Festival and 2009’s California Music Fest. The one question people ask us is why such a long name and why such a big band ? The idea of the band name and the group was concieved by Sean aka “Stymie” Sharp, after initially being recruited by the original Stymie group in the City of Compton (Los Angeles County). Having relocated to San Francisco and witnessing his new band’ s electrifying performances, Sean realized that the band needed it’s own identity and added the tag name ‘The Pimp Jones Luv Orchestra’ (PJLO). “We sing. We pluck. We strum. We bang. Often at the same time. Often in tempo. Usually in tune. Sometimes with soaring harmonies. We’re an art-music spectacle continually in development. If you MUST put us in a box, might we suggest: post-modern, indie-art, quirk-pop. But, again, only if you must. We don’t really care for boxes. We DO care for costumes and general buffoonery. We like to reinvent ourselves and sometimes we succeed. We like songs. Songs contain ideas that can feed the soul. Our songs speak to our time and place in the world. Often our songs get our blood pumpin’ and make us giddy. Our giddiness might not be readily apparent. But, rest assured, inside we’re pretty damn giddy….” — BSC

Formed in San Francisco in the summer of 2001, Slippery People has grown into a musical force that continues to surprise club dwellers around the City. While the band tips its hat to the New Wave, Ska, and Rock movements of the early 80s, the sound has synthesized into a unique cacophony of pop creativity that constantly catches folks off guard.

“We really admire bands like the Talking Heads, Prince, and the English Beat for their approach to song craft,” explains Slippery alumnus Phil Aaronson. “Those artists came along during a time period when music was created either to conform to universally accepted standards of what Pop Radio sounded like, or to throw those conventions to the wind. While those bands broke the mold, so to speak, they also redefined what popular music could be—and those echoes are still felt to this day.”

Slippery People has taken the best elements of their influences—analog synths, electronic percussion, and round acoustic drums, as well as horns, jangly guitars and monstrously percussive bass—to creative the sonic stew they have entitled, “CAUTION: SLIPPERY PEOPLE.” The album serves as both a Red Level alert, as well as a clean shot across the bow of San Francisco’s rutted alternative scene.

“At the end of the day, we are a pop band, and we give the people what they want,” continues Phil. “When you see the Slippery People perform, there is an element of, ‘What is this all about?’ We’re not shoe gazers. In fact, we are quite the opposite—dramatic and ecstatic. We’ve seen the most jaded scenesters start to dance at our shows, only to catch themselves as if to say, ‘Is this real or ironic?’”
