RYP’s music is a vehicle for Renee Yvan Padgett to sing about what’s on her mind and in her heart. With RYP, she has diverted from the straightforward funk approach and experiments with soul, pop and sometimes country musical styles. Her songs highlight her ability to sing very expressively in a multitude of styles. She writes the lyrics and music, records a demo at home, then works out the vocal and musical arrangements with the band. The band is made up of veteran San Francisco based musicians, including a 3 part horn section and also 3 backup singers. [myspace]

“San Francisco’s post-hardcore band, Songs for Snakes, seems to be strongly influenced by artists such as Drive Like Jehu and Jawbreaker, which is evident in their guitar style. Songs for Snakes has slithered all the way up from number 28 to number 1 in the past week here at KSPC.

“These Bay Area dudes are way into Jawbreaker. They also slowed the pace down a little. I enjoyed the faster songs alot more than most of the CD, which was full of slower songs and has a tendency to drag. Not as good as Jawbreaker, better than Jets To Brazil”

We’re about playin’ fast, loud, sexy, trashy down and dirty punk and roll. We’ve had some kickass players in this band and the current lineup is no exception. We’ve all been around the block and back so this shit ain’t about jumpin’ on some trendy bandwagon. This is our lives people, and along the way we’ve met and played with some amazing people, you know who you are. A couple of shows that stand out are gigs with Texas Terri, The Lewd And Dee Dee Ramone a year before he died. Yeah that’s the reason we do this, that and we have to, what else is there people besides REAL RAW ROCK AND FUCKIN’ ROLL?! We see no alternative, so if you like it fierce and fearless, check it out.

“Walken.Yeah, like Christopher Walken. San Francisco is long known for it’s spastic, experimental, genre bending cross-pollination of styles and scenes be it metal,punk,crust,post-rock,alternative or any bastardization of ‘em all, and Walken proudly sees the challenge and pisses in its face. Raging with raspy but rockin’ post-hardcore, Walken take hints from psychotics like Black Flag, B’last and pre-Melvins abusers Clown Alley and roll heads with just as many skatepunk skankin’ circle pits and humanitarian anthems as they add a progressive-punk edge to the scathing mess of progressively-thinking sub-everything-core.To not much suprise two members of Grayceon inhabit Walken’s ranks.Ugly,twitchy…catchy.” February issue of Metal Maniacs 2008

“Among a wasteland of bands attempting to ‘beachify’ their sounds – [Titles] actually succeeds in channeling the whimsy and experimentation of Brian Wilson’s finally-finished Smile.”- Air & Sea Battle

“…considering singer Brad Amorosino’s impressive songwriting and simple croon, the wonderfully lush guitar tones and the tact with which they blend the elements of dark and light in their music. I seriously cannot think of one band that Titles sounds like; they’re working off their own palate.”- Portland Mercury

“the songs are gorgeous, artful constructs, with layers of lush vocal harmonies on “Pillowcase,” woozy, off-kilter guitars on “Who To Hold” and mournful steel guitar and ghostly backing vocals on the slow-building “What Would It Take.”-The Hartford Courant

“Each song is a tiny little masterpiece from start to finish, a self-contained universe. “-CTindie

The songs on this album found their inspiration in the adventures of traveling, the beauty of staying home, and the wonderment found in watching the lives around you. Jeremy’s poetically packed lyrics and intricate guitar playing are sprinkled with hauntingly beautiful violin, heartfelt horns, whimsical percussion and occasional harmonies. The physical CD itself is packaged in recycled cardboard packs (sans plastic) and individually stamped and stenciled by Jeremy himself, making each one a unique piece of art. [from CD Universe]

Shareef Ali & The Radical Folksonomy perform deeply lyrical songs against a rich tapestry of American traditional music from folk to jazz to country to rock & roll. Poignant and revealing verse reminiscent of Leonard Cohen or Conor Oberst is laden with sweet vocal harmonies, warm Telecaster twang and cascading piano textures. A delicate trust is forged between artist and audience, “a feeling that he’s building fragile, intricate worlds inside a wind tunnel, fully aware that they may be caught in a gust at any moment.” (Britnelle Bell) Each vignette is guided along by elegant chord progressions, classical in craft and variation: though familiar forms recur in the terrain, the journey ends in quite a different place than the one in which it began. Brendan describes his official debut album A Season Intertwined as “‘Grey’s Anatomy’ music for ‘House’ people”; it is equal parts earnestly romantic, sophisticatedly tuneful and subtly clever. The towering choruses of “Rain”, “So Far Away From You” and “Metrocard” are countered by the sometimes-sarcastic, yet always-infectious cleverness of “Ghost”, “Sky Is Falling” and “Asparagus”. A truce between the two sides of Brendan’s spheres of composition finally comes in the teen-angst anthem “Kill Me So Slow”, a sing-along popular among many of his friends and fans. The album’s haunting closer “Blue Hands” recalls Sufjan Stevens and Kings Of Convenience with its acoustic tenderness. [facebook]

Grinn & Barrett’s style of lyrical pop songs have been influenced by early 90’s grunge, classic blues, folk, electro-pop, and even reggae. Bronwyn’s melodic vocals and bright guitar sound are met with Natalie’s creative and strong drum beats to create the Grinn & Barrett sound, indie-folk-grunge-pop. [website]

Red Light Circuit plays high energy rock shows laden with guitar solos, screaming vocals, and a pervasive pop sensibility that drives audiences to dance and sing along. Micah Jolly, the group’s singer and rhythm guitarist, began playing in bands with bassist Ron Dore in Santa Barbara where the duo gained a reputation for writing inventive songs steeped in the greater tradition of American rock and roll. In 2009 they moved to San Francisco and joined forces with classically trained drummer Abe Waggoner. With the addition of talented lead guitarist Kyle Ward, the band recorded two EPs and gained a devoted following playing Northern California shows in the Bay Area and beyond. [myspace]

Losing oneself isn’t necessarily something to shy away from; in the case of the debut EP from San Francisco trio Interchangeable Hearts, such an outcome should probably be welcomed. Fronted by the coolly unhurried vocals of Lina Hancock, the three-piece arrives well-versed in matching stark atmospherics with melancholic ruminations on matters of love, at times recalling Midnight Movies at their most minimal or Sub Pop-era Saint Etienne at their most somber. – Todd Lavoie, San Francisco Bay Guardian (Facebook)

The Record Winter is a band from northern California comprised of members hailing from what was once a thriving San Jose music scene- founding member Dominic Miranda and friends are still working to keep that scene alive. Stemming from his former start-up effort, Avenues, Dominic has chiseled his song writing skills into a finely crafted work of art in which he seems to have perfected within this new found ensemble, where he helms the titles of vocal frontman and guitarist.
