San Francisco’s John Dwyer used to push primitive blues-rock to ultraraucous extremes in Coachwhips. His current band, Thee Oh Sees (formerly OCS), also draws on vintage styles—woozy ’50s-style pop, Troggs-like stomp—but it funnels them into something hushed and pervasively eerie. Sucks Blood brims with oddities like “What the Driven Drink,” in which Dwyer and Brigid Dawson croon like teen lovers at the soda fountain, even as weird wisps of sculpted static drift by. “The Gouger” juxtaposes cryptically ominous lyrics with pillowy, old-timey reverb and a twinkling guitar lead. Many a savage punk has gone tame with age, but that evolution rarely has this kind of intoxicating power. — Hank Shteamer

LiTiDo

“LaTiDo” is the Spanish word for heartbeat. “LaTiDo” is a quartet that specializes in danceable traditional Cuban music styles like “Son,” “Cha-cha-cha,” “Guajira,” “Mambo,” and “Bolero” among others. In spite of their brief existence (since 2003) this explosive quartet has garnered a great reputation throughout the Bay Area among dancers and listeners alike, having performed to sold out audiences at re-known venues like Yoshi’s, Yerba Buena Gardens, San Francisco Jazz Festival, Stanford Jazz Concert Series, San José Jazz Festival and Sonoma Jazz Festival to mention a few. “LaTiDo’s” music takes us back in time, invites us to dance, and it is equally enjoyed by the more laid back listener. Close intricate vocal harmonies, the rhythm pulse of the Bongó drum and Bass, the unique sound of the traditional Tres Guitar (a three double set string instrument developed in Cuba) the Flute and the lively compositions are surely to please every audience. “LaTiDo” plays Latin Music from the heart.

Her flair for the dramatic swirls through the music ambitiously, yet the drama now seems more honest, the sentiment sweeter and more vulnerable. The most recent incarnation of Fiction Like Candy is a little less fiction, a little more candy. And it will still leave you craving more…

The Triffles – Rock Comedy Punk
http://www.myspace.com/thetrifles

How unexpectedly taxing it is to locate adequate images of trifles. I have been trolling the virtual galaxy for what seem like endless hours, my mind clogged with dense, creamy images of suffocated strawberries and pieces of dessicated cake, cast adrift in the cold lava of custard. These forlorn fossils of British dessertery sling me back to dark summer afternoons where the clouds hung low, and I sought comfort in the brilliant depths of the fridge, as the moon prepared for its evening chores… As for the band, it’s a multilayered melange of odd-shaped bits that stick in your throat and make you want to sing for joy! Trifles! And now, the all-new MINI TRIFLES!!! It’s the Trifles gone all cute and acoustic, with accordion, vibraphone, tinkly-tackity percussion, and even a bit of violin. Same people, same songs – VERY DIFFERENT!!!

The Annual Cheshire Rock Opera

Culminated from an early love of the writings of Lewis Carroll (who was also a favorite literature of my household), into a rock opera which features his effect on popular music & some of the poetry from the book set to music of my own device. it’s first performance, first show was january 27, 2004 @ Van Kleef’s in Oakland. It was quite a production including the queen’s concert, tea party trio, suitcase puppet show of walrus & carpenter and the jabberwock monstermasks. Twas a mad evening of fun… [myspace]

It’s hard to convey the power of a live show through a CD, but Street Light Suzie pulls it off with seemingly no effort. Their debut album, “Red River Revival” is a raucous jaunt through everything that makes Rock-N-Roll fun.
-Karsten Kroos, Edge Magazine

Street light Suzie is a toxic trio consisting of Wiley Ross on Guitar and Vocals, Ben Evans on the Bass and Chuy Trevino on the drums. Street light Suzie began when Wiley moved to Austin from Springfield Missouri and Ben from Denver Colorado. The first handful of bands Ben tried playin with were a bunch of tools, as was the case with Wiley. So out of frustration Ben put an add in the musician section of the Chronicle that read, “looking for other musicians to drink beer, smoke pot and Rock out…” Wiley was one of the only few who responded. They immediatelly started practicing in Ben’s shitty apt. and once they had a handfull of songs down they started looking for a drummer. They went through 24 try outs (most so excrutiating we don’t even wanna talk about it) until they found Drummer 1. But only after a small handful of shows he left the band. As was the case with drummers 2, drummer 3 and 4. But none the less they made progress playing rowdy show after rowdy show. They now have landed Chuy Trevino on the drums and play shows all the time all over the United States. [myspace]

i was born on january 8th, 1984 in morgantown, west virginia….southern born and midwest raised in indianapolis, indiana. i love when words and melody genuinely match up with the heart of the singer, with where they are in their lives, with truth and that is what i try to do. as i’ve begun to let go of fulfulling others expectations of what, “good music” is, my songs have poured out with more frequency and more heart. i would love for you to listen!
