Casino Night Benefit: the Road to Molepi

When: Thur, September 15
Time: 6-9pm
Cost: DONATION
Details:
Join us for a Casino fundraiser to build a road to the school in Mopeli, Lesotho, Africa. This road will provide a dry and even surface for the kids to walk to school, the school to receive necessary supplies for the kids, PLUS, the school will then be a Clinic for health care to over 12,000 residents. Have fun playing BlackJack, Craps, texas hold ‘em or 21 at El rio. Any amount of money will buy you chips so you can play in any or all of the games. All proceeds benefit the “Road to Mopeli” in Lesotho, Africa.

About this Peace Corps Partnership Project:
The village of Tabola, in Leribe, Lesotho, would like to connect Mopeli Primary School to electricity and build a brick road from the main tarred road to the school. We are hoping to do these two things in order to help Tabola and ten other surrounding villages with a medical facility and educational improvements. The lines for electricity come right up to the edge of one of our buildings, so connecting to the school should not be difficult. When Mopeli was built, the piping for electrical wiring was included in each building, as were wall outlets. We have been offered help from three electrical engineers who are willing to donate their time for this installation. With electricity and a paved road, will come an enormous amount of benefits for all the villages
in this area:

  • Light for the children while they are in school.
  • Our ability to hold after-school classes for herds boys and servant girls who are presently unable to attend school.
  • Our ability to hold after-school adult education classes.
  • Our ability to offer H.I.V./Aid’s workshops for all who want to attend.
  • Our ability to offer support groups for orphans, vulnerable children, those with H.I.V./Aid’s and those who are in some way affected y H.I.V./Aid’s.
  • Our ability to extend the hours of our community library so that people of all ages can come during the evening.
  • Our ability to make Mopeli a community center, a place where people from all the villages may come for meetings, gatherings, feasts and celebrations of all sorts.
  • Physically handicapped people will be able to get to our school.
  • We will purchase a photocopy machine that could be accessed by anyone in the community for a small fee.
  • And last, but certainly NOT LEAST, our ability to offer an extension to the St Rose Health Clinic, located in Peka. They have offered to come at least one day a week to service our villages’ needs. (Please note that our eleven villages have NO medical services at the moment…no hospital, Dr.’s office…not even a nurse!)
The children of the village of Tabola

The children of the village of Tabola

The road to Mopeli is horrendous. It is really more like a rocky cow path than a road. During the rainy season, the road fills with water and is virtually impassable for vehicles. The children have to either wade or hop rocks to get to school. A brick road would help all coming to visit our community center, especially the physically disabled.

At the core are the sparring male and female vocals of Jenn Courtney and songwriter Maurice Tani, framed with Steve Kallai’s sweet fiddle, Tani’s guitar work, Mike Anderson’s slappin’, clankin’, doghouse, bull-fiddle, acoustic bass, and the virtuous, ethical, thoroughly “drummy” drumming of drummer Christopher Fisher. The sound is sometimes breathy acoustic, sometimes searing electric, sometimes both.

The Legend Of Kitty Rose
Website: http://www.kittyroselegend.com/
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Legend-of-Kitty-Rose/163537743704895?sk=info
Kitty Rose was a well-known country western singer in the mid-1970′s in the waning days of Nashville, when glittered suits and cheesy arrangements ruled the day. It was uncool to be in country music back then, a genre reserved for red-necks, hicks and sodbusters. At a young age, Kitty appeared on the stage of the Ryman Auditorium, the “church of country music” along with her mentor and dearest friend, Sandy Saunders, then an up-and-coming star herself. They recorded a live album on April 1, 1972 before the Ryman closed its doors, some said then, for good. The following summer, Sandy died in a horrific car accident in the southwest desert. Kitty Rose refused to return to the stage without Sandy and her legend survived only in small circles of die-hard fans and classic country affectionados. Fast-forward to the present day and after the re-discovery of “Kitty Roses’ Greatest Hits!” and “Live at The Ryman”, Kitty Rose was found wandering the streets of a small Northern California town called Hopland, now a ghost of her former self, tending her horse ranch in the nearby hills. Legend has it that she actually is a ghost – dead and returned from hell – cursed forever for killing Sandy’s road manager who was drunk at the wheel that fateful night Sandy lost her head. Coaxed out of retirement, “The Legend of Kitty Rose” is the first recording of this some-time Nashville star since the early 1970′s. The voice is rough and the subject of her songs melancholy, some say after loosing her soul to the devil, but you’ll agree there still remain hints of her glorious past amongst the legends of country music. – The Kitty Rose Fan Club

The Patsychords are not just a Patsy Cline tribute band. We run the gamut from her greatest hits and obscure gems to other classic country songs. Margaret Belton’s love of Patsy began at a young age. She only receently decided to take her corn-fed hometown flavor to the stage. She hand-picked her players from notable local San Francisco bands. The Patsychords emulate the lonesome, velvet tones of Ms. Patsy while adding their own personal touch of sass and grit.. The Patsychords are vocalist Margaret Belton. She would make Patsy proud with her vocal stylings. Guitarist Sunny Haire, plays a distinctly rhythmic, yet melodic guitar. Chock full of reverby goodness. Sunny has been in many bands, most notably, The Bedlam Rovers, Waycross, Knife and Fork and Enorchestra. Roxane Chicoine is an upright bassist who brings a vintage rockabilly flavor. She slapped the doghouse bass in Mighty Slim Pickens and The Rev Tones. Jai Bird Carrell is an alt-country drummer hailing from Austin. She holds down the country and rock rhythms.

Andrew plays some drums. Greg plays guitar. Young tries to sing and play guitar at the same time but has trouble doing it well sometimes. Alex is good at the bass. Young and Andrew like music and burritos so they formed a band. Greg likes music too so he came along for the ride. We found Alex on craigslist. We thought he was going to be crazy but he turned out alright. Young saw a picture of a lion riding a horse and he chose that for our name. He writes the songs and then the rest of us make them better. We like what we do and we hope you enjoy our music or at least not want to throw things at us. If you do, please throw sandwiches. Thank you.

Jay Trainer combines thick, prolific guitar riffs and stark lyricism, while drawing on the traditions of funk, rock, blues, and psychedelia to craft a modern classic. The singer/songwriter possesses a unique ability to effortlessly negotiate tone and volume, moving from a quiet, almost jazzy tone to a booming thunder at any given moment. The effect calls to mind the masters of several genres of rock music. [myspace]

Lagtime is a three-piece, improv–fusion band. Our music is rooted in rocky fusion, but spans topics such as jazz, funk, reggae and blues. We live mostly down deep in the pocket, but with the liberating guidance of jazz, we make brief re–surfacings to the head to remind you of where you (we) are.

With us, interplay is the name of the game as each member feeds off the others. Rock-solid beats and jazzy tendencies open the door for groove–based, blues–inspired bass lines and a tapestry of infectious melodies and rock–god solos. [website]

Eight Piece Powerhouse fronted by three talented women who really know how to work the crowd. This is the real deal, working class local talent that brings the sound of San Francisco street soul to the people.

Wicked Mercies is a funky soul band. Listening to them gives me a goofy smile as I raise my hands in the air and sporadically scream, Oh Yeah, to the dismay of my neighbors. Does life have you down? Are you depressed? Flick your Prozac down the drain and just put Wicked Mercies on continuous play. Shake it proud. They are The Supremes for 2010. Addie, Crystal and Ashley front the group with their powerful energy and vocals. The band backs them with their soul and funk fusion. A perfect accompaniment.- Tony DuShane, SFGate.com

The Bootcuts

The Bootcuts

The Bootcuts
http://www.bootcuts.com
We had very humble beginnings starting out as a cubicle-based trio (Cristal, Meg and Matt) singing songs about hyperactive cats, swampbuggies and tornadoes. It’s all we knew.

As we added key members to the band–Lori on vocals, Tom on bass, Ross on drums–we developed our sound and expanded our songwriting to include topics such as building relationships, the destruction of those relationships, and the rebuilding of THOSE destructed relationships. And we ramped up a pretty fun live show in the process.

“Misisipi” Mike Wolf was added to replace ex-boyfriend guitarist Jon Seltzer (long story) and there you have the modern sounds of The Bootcuts. [website]
