Lagtime is a three-piece, improv–fusion band. Our music is rooted in rocky fusion, but spans topics such as jazz, funk, reggae and blues. We live mostly down deep in the pocket, but with the liberating guidance of jazz, we make brief re–surfacings to the head to remind you of where you (we) are.

With us, interplay is the name of the game as each member feeds off the others. Rock-solid beats and jazzy tendencies open the door for groove–based, blues–inspired bass lines and a tapestry of infectious melodies and rock–god solos. [website]

We have spent the last several months recording all of our band practices and exploring different ideas.. What we have come up with is a large catalog of improvisational tunes ranging from soft jazz, to frenetic fusion, to rock and roll. We hope that you enjoy.. We have still be writing more of our typical mind straining, bone crushing material you have heard from us in the past, but we are also pushing our musical boundaries and exploring new territory. Please enjoy..

“A virtuoso of acoustic upright double bass, Whiton slaps, bows, maneuvers, and manipulates his instrument with orchestral precision and street-corner desperation.” –Silke Tudor, SF Weekly, SF, CA

He has invented and developed a right-hand slap technique that is absolutely his own. He uses effects widely, transforming the wooden sound of his upright bass into caterwauling, distorted wah-wah, electronica synth rubberized wet bass, buzzsaw distortion. He orchestrates the rhythm section around the textures he pulls out of his bass. Above all, he is tasteful, building space into groove and playing with an attention to the whole.
