http://www.myspace.com/alaricalaricAlaric began in 2008 when 3 friends with similar interests decided to start a band which would thoroughly investigate the textures, energies and vibrations of dark, guitar-driven electric music influenced by the Post-Punk and Death Rock that they loved so much. These visionaries brought a lot of experience to the table. Drummer Jason Willer had been touring, recording and touring some more with British Punk legends the U.K. Subs from 2001 through 2006. Bassist and songwriter Rick Jacobus, childhood friend of Jason’s and former bassist in the two’s first band The Enemies began writing new material and soon approached their singer and lyricist of choice Shane Baker who spent several years touring the world in the infamous Oakland band Dead and Gone to fill the vocal position and fortunately he agreed. A few months and several unsuccessful guitar auditions later they convinced guitarist and fellow Death Rock freak Russ Kent to come and check it out and from the first chords they struck it was clear that the line up was now complete.

He has invented and developed a right-hand slap technique that is absolutely his own. He uses effects widely, transforming the wooden sound of his upright bass into caterwauling, distorted wah-wah, electronica synth rubberized wet bass, buzzsaw distortion. He orchestrates the rhythm section around the textures he pulls out of his bass. Above all, he is tasteful, building space into groove and playing with an attention to the whole.

Some people say the Grannies are the inevitable end result from a society that has abandoned its educational system and lost all contact with its morality and civic cohesiveness. The truth, of course, is much, much worse. The old, now defunct Mission Police Station, San Francisco circa 1999 is as good a birthplace as any for a phenomena as degenerate and altogether fucked up as The Grannies. The blame could be laid at the feet of Fate, but Fate already catches a lot of shit just by standing around, and really wants nothing to do with something as mentally debilitating as The Grannies anyway. Somewhere between 30 and 163 years old, they were drawn to each other there in the fetid human-ish stew slopped together in the holding cells. Petty crimes involving Wild Turkey, electricity, naugahyde, Top Ramen, pigeon feathers (“fresh”), Drano, or some combination thereof would be the official reasons for the various Grannies’ incarcerations that fateful night (yes, we know, Fate, you already cleared yourself, so piss off), if any official record existed. It became rapidly apparent that the group had been thrown together for a purpose…[myspace]
