Review by SF GATE of The San Francisco Chronicle:Off the Record, the skinny on the San Francisco Bay Area music scene. 9/17/10:”One Latina mermaid will shake her sexy hips and knock you out with her sultry voice. The band plays bluesy rock numbers while Sophia Anita Reyes, the lead singer, teases the audience in her sexy underwear and stockings.

Backed by an all-star four-piece lineup, the girls deliver a dexterous and distinctive blend of 60s go-go, soul, bubblegum, girl-group, and garage. Hear them sing, wail, scream, harmonize, plead, beg, and shout from atop their totemic pedestals. See them shimmy, shake, twist, dog, monkey, duck, bird, funky chicken, and pony like their ancestors of yore.

The Whitney Myer Band is a family affair, with vocalist Whitney Myer backed by father Scott Myer on guitar and uncle Fred Myer on drums. And Bassist Gia Torcaso from Nevada’s, fertile music scene — rounds out the ambitious quartet. The music bug first bit hard in the Myer clan when Scott and Fred started jamming with neighborhood kids in the East San Francisco Bay. The twins ended up with full-fledged careers, backing nationally touring acts such as Dave Mason and Commander Cody. The 1990s found Scott and Fred in The Mudsharks, a Reno-based ska band that shared bills with acts such as No Doubt and Sublime…. Raised on the beaches of Hawaii and in the Mountains of the Pacific Northwest, Aaron Blyth’s music is as diverse and eclectic as his background. Pulling from strong influences of Folk, Rock, Blues and Funk, this singer/songwriter blends his favorite flavors into a uniquely energetic sound. From his days of playing Tom Petty covers at bonfire parties in high school, to playing with his band Soul Plain in college, Aaron is now spreading his music around California to any ears that wanna listen….
If you cut Richard Simmons in half and kept his left side and you cut Glenn Danzig in half and kept his right side and sewed the two together down the middle, you would file us between the sweaty (halves) of Richard Danzig Simmons. Meaning: We’re very energetic and we rock with evil intensity. We cite Split Lip Rayfield and Djano Reinhardt as our biggest influences and, at our best, remind people of the Bad Livers, Cheap Suit Serenaders, Violent Femmes and Tenacious D, among others. Laura Jean is the new project from Oakland duo Laura and Danny Allen (High Diving Horses). They are unruly pop that sometimes detours down the Mississippi River late at night on a bender. Catchy melodies and scrappy guitars tones seamlessly mix with jangle punk, drunken banjo and junkyard percussion. The band are a bunch of people who love to play music and are really good at it, including John Would, Amy Wood, Julian Anderle and Luther Monday on harmonica. They like Mexican restaurants, people who do stuff, and music that you want to turn up really loud while driving.

COTM have descended to Earth to rock wickedly. Lay down your cynicism and join the post-ironic new sincerity movement currently sweeping across this great land. All you need is love. And tight pants.

Hailing from the regolith region of the Earth’s lone satellite, CHEETAHS ON THE MOON have arrived on the terrestrial musical scene to do nothing less than revolutionize rock-n-roll with power ballads as hot-cool as a lunar magma ocean. Go ahead…tug our whiskers…you’ll see when we scratch.

“Solid southern classic rock with top notch musicianship and a dash of humor. This group is a must see at least because of their country bluegrass cover of ‘Pour Some Sugar on Me.’ If you haven’t heard Def Leppard on banjo, you haven’t lived.” -Erikka Innes, SF Indie Music Examiner, examiner.com

Road singing, gargling, thinking too much and playing guitar; Crystal Bradley (Partyline) playing drums; Jackie O. (Girlcrush) playing bass; and Turtle Garaufis (Rude Mechanical Orchestra) playing guitar. Frank Leone (The Unlovables) also plays guitar and is on our 7″, but does not come on tour. Slippery People

http://www.slipperypeople.com/

Formed in San Francisco in the summer of 2001, Slippery People has grown into a musical force that continues to surprise club dwellers around the City. While the band tips its hat to the New Wave, Ska, and Rock movements of the early 80s, the sound has synthesized into a unique cacophony of pop creativity that constantly catches folks off guard.

“We really admire bands like the Talking Heads, Prince, and the English Beat for their approach to song craft,” explains Slippery alumnus Phil Aaronson. “Those artists came along during a time period when music was created either to conform to universally accepted standards of what Pop Radio sounded like, or to throw those conventions to the wind. While those bands broke the mold, so to speak, they also redefined what popular music could be—and those echoes are still felt to this day.”

Slippery People has taken the best elements of their influences—analog synths, electronic percussion, and round acoustic drums, as well as horns, jangly guitars and monstrously percussive bass—to creative the sonic stew they have entitled, “CAUTION: SLIPPERY PEOPLE.” The album serves as both a Red Level alert, as well as a clean shot across the bow of San Francisco’s rutted alternative scene.

“At the end of the day, we are a pop band, and we give the people what they want,” continues Phil. “When you see the Slippery People perform, there is an element of, ‘What is this all about?’ We’re not shoe gazers. In fact, we are quite the opposite—dramatic and ecstatic. We’ve seen the most jaded scenesters start to dance at our shows, only to catch themselves as if to say, ‘Is this real or ironic?’”

http://www.myspace.com/weareinvisible
We Are Invisible is a three-piece rock band from San Francisco with multiple music personalities. Call it classic Heart meets tough girl Concrete Blond meets the hammer-fisted drums of Clutch. Formed in 2004 after drummer Dom moved to San Francisco by way of Germany, sisters Jennifer and Rebecca immediately began writing the beginnings of their first album (We Are Invisible) and recording at SF’s own Tiny Telephone. After international radio play and several gigs and beers later, the group returned to Tiny to record the shockingly epic and raw GIANT, WAI’s first EU export, released in 2005 on Poison Free Records (PFX). Repeat radio, gigs and beers. In 2007, WAI returned to the studio to record Three, possibly the band’s most cohesive, balanced mix of polyrhythm, drive, and melody. For We Are Invisible, they’d prefer to just call it rock. [myspace]

http://www.myspace.com/martinschneider
THE MIDWAY DELTA’S Martin Schneider and John Kontogianis have known each other casually for nearly 15 years, often running into each other at Bay Area local independent music venues hosting the best bands. They talked about playing music together many times and came awfully close in 1998 when Martin tried out for an open bass slot in John’s band JOLLY. Martin chose to stay with his band at the time THE LIVING ROOMS only to see them fall apart several months later and after JOLLY were on the move with a new bassist. They made contact again when John sent an e-mail to Martin’s Myspace band page for LIGHT SLEEPERS to catch up. His timing was good, LIGHT SLEEPERS was about to lose a member to the state of North Carolina and two others to another band. THE MIDWAY DELTA rehearses in the basement of a music store in Antioch, CA drawing inspiration from both the room full of lonely pianos above their heads and the rising and falling waters of the nearby Delta.
